Outcome of Membership Vote - Changes to RS Vareo Class Rules

Further to the recent letter and RS Vareo voting form, the vote has now closed and 22 votes were received. Thanks to those who took the time to vote. 22 of the voters (100%) agreed with proposed amendment 3, and 21 of the voters (95%) agreed with proposed amendments 1 and 2. The new rules are outlined below. The full rules are now on the website under documents and will be in your 2005 Yearbook. Change to the RS Vareo mainsail clew outhaul control system specification: To change the routing and termination of the outhaul through a standard Super Spar boom outboard end plug, through the boom exiting via a sheave at the inboard end, cleated in a clam cleat under the boom and finally lead through a block suspended on an eye attached to the underside of the boom near the inboard end. Reason: To aid the adjustment of the outhaul, with a low cost and commonly used solution. 2. Changed Rule 1.3.14: The total velocity ratio in each control line system shall not exceed:- - kicking strap 8:1 - cunningham 4:1 - mainsail clew outhaul 4:1 Reason: to limit the velocity ratio of the mainsail clew outhaul assuming the new specification for the mainsail clew outhaul control system described above is adopted. 3. Changed Rule 1.3.2: The use of flexible tape, thin line, shockcord, shackles or rings, as long as this does not modify the effective sheeting of any sail nor the intended purpose or action of any equipment. Reason: there have been a number of modifications made, for example continuous control lines and sheet tidy systems. These modifications do not give any advantage but enable people to modify the boat to suit their sailing style.

Outcome of RS Vareo Rule Change Vote

We now have a very definite outcome to the recent vote on the RS Vareo Rules. Details are as below. 20 RS Vareo members (42%) returned their forms, and the vote was unanimously for the inclusion of all 3 proposed rule changes. The rules on the website will be amended accordingly, or contact the RS Association office for a copy of the new rules. Amendment 1 - New Rule 1.3.15: The spinnaker halyard and downhaul may be continuous or separate; their routing and operation is not restricted, additional blocks or fairleads may be fitted as required. Reason: This is the same rule as allowed in RS200s and RS400s and it was the intention to include this in the original Vareo class rules. This will allow the spinnaker halyard routing to be varied to suit individuals which many Vareo owners have already done. Amendment 2 - New Rule 1.3.16: The mainsheet may be led externally to the boom if the sheet is continuously supported for at least 80% of the external run along the boom. Reason: The mainsheet can be taken outside the boom at the moment without adding or altering fittings. If it is not supported this arrangement could be potentially dangerous with the mainsheet looping round helms head during gybing and tacking. Amendment 3 � New Rule 1.3.17: One gybing strop may be added defined as a length of rope, of maximum 10mm diameter, attached to the forward mainsheet block eye on the boom. A single block or ring may be attached to the lower end of the gybing strop. The gybing strop shall only be used during the gybing manoeuvre. Reason: Gybing strop has been fitted as standard for some time but this rule both defines the strop and limits its use as per RS200s.
